Top Tips For Getting A Dog

Posted on July 18, 2024May 21, 2025 by Terri's Little Haven

Thinking of getting a dog? Having a dog in your home is a lot of fun but it’s important that you’re aware of the time and money that goes into keeping a dog. After all, the saying is very accurate ‘a dog isn’t just for Christmas’.

With that in mind, if you’re looking to get a dog this year or in the future, here are some top tips for getting one.

Do your research on dog breeds

First and foremost, be sure to do your research on dog breeds. Whether you’re looking to get a small dog or a big dog, every dog breed is different. Therefore, it’s necessary to know what to expect from dog breeds, especially when you’re not that clued up on dog breeds in general.

You might have a dog breed that you’d love to have and have always wanted but upon further research, they’re simply not the right pick for you and your home. While you may be itching to get a dog, you want to make sure it’s the right breed for you and your family’s lifestyle.

Breeder vs Shelter

The route you take between breeder versus a shelter is one to consider carefully. While some people believe that breeding only adds to the problem of abandoned dogs, it’s all down to your personal preference, particularly if you’re after the right dog breed.

Breeders are great when you’re looking for a specific type of dog that might not be readily available in rescue centers, however, you will be paying more for breeders in general and you’ll be having the dog from a puppy.

Shelters are more affordable but you might be limited to dog breeds, with some having certain health problems or behavioral issues.

Make your home dog-friendly

Making your home dog-friendly is much like baby-proofing your home. You want to make sure that the home is suitable for a dog to roam in, especially if they’re a puppy. Puppies will get a hold of anything and everything while you’re trying to train them on what to drop.

Look at things that are an obvious danger or things you might want to lock away as they hold a lot of value.

Look for a trainer

Trainers are great for helping train up your dog for the benefit of good behavior. It’s useful for helping adapt to the routine of a new dog, whether they’re a puppy or an adult. Dog training near me will be readily available, so it’s good to do your research and find the best trainers for your needs.

Establish a routine

Establishing a routine is important when it comes to getting a dog. A dog comes with a routine where they’ll need to be taken out regularly, food needs to be given and they get plenty of attention. Having a routine in place from the beginning is going to make things easier.

Getting a dog is a great addition to the home, so with that being said, use these tips when bringing a dog into your home.
