7 Things Every Secure Home Should Have

7 Things Every Secure Home Should Have

Posted on February 6, 2024May 22, 2025 by Terri's Little Haven

You want your home to be secure but, there’s a fine line between feeling like a cozy fortress and resembling a high-security prison, right? After all, your home should be your sanctuary, not a place where you expect a SWAT team to burst through at any minute. So what do you do? Here are some ideas that will help you to create a safe haven that is also a relaxing sanctuary.

1. Got a Gun? Get a Safe

If you’re a gun owner, and you don’t already have one, buy gun safe online right now, no arguing. A good gun safe not only keeps your guns away from curious little hands but also burglars who might be shopping around and who could do you harm if they find it, and you know, a gun safe is a great place to stash any other small valuables too, so there’s that.

2. Smart Locks for Unintrusive Security

Upgrade your door locks to the smart variety, and they will do a great job of protecting your home and family without being too obvious or intrusive. With features like fingerprint recognition and remote access through your smartphone, you’ll feel like you’re living in the future. Just don’t forget your phone!

3. Security Cameras are a Must

Security cameras have come a long way from the bulky, obtrusive eyesores of the past. Today’s versions are sleek, smart, and sometimes nearly invisible. So, you’re going to want some. Basically, they’re there to lookout for suspicious activity so you don’t have to twitch the curtains. And with live feeds accessible through your phone, you can always see what’s happening at home, whether you’re in the backyard or Bali.

4. Motion Sensor Lighting: Because No One Likes Surprises

It’s never a bad idea to illuminate your home’s exterior with motion sensor lighting. It’s the perfect way to welcome guests and deter uninvited ones. After all, nothing says “maybe try the next house” quite like a spotlight on a sneaky approach. Plus, you’ll never trip over that garden gnome again.

5. A Safe Room

For the ultra-cautious, or if you just love the idea of having a secret room, consider a safe room. It’s not just for Hollywood movies; a well-planned safe room can provide a last-resort refuge in case of a break-in or natural disaster. Stock it with essentials and make it comfortable. It could double as a panic room or the ultimate hide-and-seek spot.

6. Wi-Fi Network Protection

In the digital age, home security isn’t just about physical barriers. Protect your Wi-Fi network with a strong password and consider a firewall to keep digital intruders at bay. Your personal information should be just that – personal. Think of it as putting a lock on your virtual front door.

7. A Good Dog

Last but certainly not least, never underestimate the power of a good dog. Not only are they loyal companions, but their barks can be a better deterrent than any high-tech alarm system. Just make sure you’re equipped to care for their needs before you go down this route.

Securing your home doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style or comfort, so what are you waiting for?
