8 Ways To Make a Move Stress-Free

8 Ways To Make a Move Stress-Free

Posted on April 9, 2017May 21, 2025 by Terri's Little Haven

Moving isn’t easy, and it’s among the most stressful life events that anyone endures. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are many tips that you can use to make your move virtually stress free. Here are eight of them.

1. Start Early

It’s the perfect time to get rid of all of the clutter that’s piled up over the last several years. This means that you don’t have to have a moving company pack it up and take it along to your new home. Give yourself plenty of time for this task because it will give you more time to complete all of the other necessary steps.

2. Practice Self Care

With so much going on, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself. Unfortunately, this may make it more likely that you’ll get sick or miss out on the sleep that ensures that you make good decisions. Look for little ways to treat yourself or relax during the course of your move.

3. Organize Yourself

To-do lists are enormously helpful in the midst of a move. Write down all of the tasks on your to-do list on a calendar so that you can space them out over a period of time. Six to eight weeks is generally a good rule of thumb.

4. Ask Friends and Family for Help

Chances are good that you’ve got friends or family members who are willing to help you with sorting and packing, even for a couple of hours. This is particularly valuable if you’ll be moving out of the area and won’t be seeing everyone for a while.

5. Say Farewell

Take the time to visit all of your favorite haunts before you move. Enjoy a night out with friends at a beloved restaurant, take a walk along your favorite street and visit the local park where you’ve spent hours with your family. You’ll feel more at peace with all of the changes going on around you.

6. Hire Reliable Movers

The full service movers you choose can make all of the difference in the world. They can handle much of your packing, take all of your belongings to your new home and unpack them for you. Leave all of the delicate items in their hands. You can trust them to get the job done right so you don’t have to worry about it.

7. Pack an Essentials Bag

Keep the necessary items with you on the day of the move. This may include medications, a toothbrush, snacks, bottles of water, pajamas and any other items that you can’t live without. Pack enough to get you through a day or two. If you have children, make certain that their bag has some toys and games to keep them occupied.

8. Stay Flexible

It’s rare to have everything go according to plan. When the unexpected happens, be prepared to roll with it. A little bit of patience will serve you well and keep your mind clear so that you can come up with a contingency plan.
