Parents Are Ditching Gentle Parenting for This New Approach

Parents Are Ditching Gentle Parenting for This New Approach

Posted on August 6, 2025 by Terri's Little Haven

Somewhere between trying to be everywhere at once and googling every parenting question six times a day, a parenting pendulum has swung again. Enter FAFO parenting, shorthand for “find out for yourself.”  It might just be the parenting trend your family needs right now.

Gentle Parenting Is Trending But Under Scrutiny

Gentle parenting, with its empathy, calm communication, and friendship vibes, has been popular among Gen Z and millennial parents. It emphasizes understanding, nurturing, and low conflict. But a new study is raising questions. While the approach builds emotional bonds, experts warn it may lead to overly permissive environments where children struggle with boundaries and accountability.

What Is FAFO Parenting and Why Parents Are Talking About It

Moms and dads on TikTok and parenting blogs are exploring FAFO parenting as a counterpoint. The concept lets kids face age-appropriate consequences, like forgetting a snack or resisting a raincoat and getting wet, so they learn responsibility firsthand. Advocates say this approach builds resilience, self-reliance, and critical thinking.

Why Experts Are Still Urging Balance

Letting kids learn from mistakes can be powerful, but experts caution against leaving them to fend for themselves. It is key that guidance comes with limits so kids feel supported, not abandoned. Financial experts suggest giving kids small amounts of money to manage and letting them make low stakes financial choices. Oversight matters.

Real Parenting Is About Trust With Boundaries

Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently spoke about the downside of overparenting. She encouraged letting kids make choices, even mistakes, so they learn judgment and resilience. She argues that trust, not control, is what prepares kids for real life.

How We Tried It at Home

We started small. If the kiddo forgot a lunch, they took responsibility and faced hunger. When they refused a jacket and got a little wet, they learned to grab the coat next time. We never let things get unsafe. We just let natural consequences teach the lesson. Over time we saw more thoughtful decisions and fewer reminders. And surprise surprise, fewer meltdowns.

Tips to Try FAFO Parenting Safely

  • Choose low risk situations where mistakes teach habits
  • Talk after the consequence, not before, to help kids reflect
  • Never shame, always empathize and support afterward
  • Keep expectations clear and consistent
  • Celebrate learning moments, not just good behavior

Final Thoughts

The rise of FAFO parenting does not have to mean abandoning kindness. It means stepping back, letting your child learn by living, with you as a steady guide. The goal is strong, confident kids who make good choices, not perfect kids who fear failure. Trust the process, offer love and support, and watch your child grow in ways you never expected.
