How to Make Your Rooms Look and Feel Bigger

Unless you get an extension or move to a larger house, there isn’t much you can do to physically add space to your home. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t deal with a cramped property and make it feel larger.

Here are a few decor tips to make you feel like you have more space in your home.

Open Plan Layout

One of the most extreme ways to make your home more spacious is to change the layout. Sometimes a bad layout makes things feel more cramped than they need to be.

An open plan property feels more airy and bright, which also makes it feel larger. You can also arrange things between rooms that were once locked away, allowing you to be more flexible with your layout options.

You can still create divisions between spaces by arranging your furniture so you have different zones in your living space, rather than different rooms.

When knocking through walls to make an open space plan, bear in mind that certain walls can’t be knocked down. These are called “load bearing walls” walls, because they contribute to the structural integrity of your home. Thankfully, you can identify them quite easily because they are usually sturdier than other interior walls. Always get a contractor to change the layout of your property.

Declutter

Sometimes, the main reason that your home feels too small is because you have too much stuff. This is a common problem for people who have downsized or moved multiple households into one property.

Even if you have enough space for everything you need, you might not have quite enough space for everything you have.

Everyone should consider cutting down on clutter every now and then anyway, whether you need the space or not. Sort through your belongings and work out what you want to keep and what you could get rid of.

From there, you can sell belongings that are still in good condition on second hand online marketplaces, or you can donate them to charity shops for other people to buy. Or, if you’re getting rid of actual junk, take it to the landfill and see if you can recycle it.

Add Storage Solutions

Another take on the clutter problem is to put it away. Sometimes a home feels small and cluttered because too many things are on show.

Even if you have a small space, you can still add storage solutions that allow you to put things away when you don’t need them. This will make your home easier to keep clean and tidy, and will definitely make it feel much more spacious.

Clever storage options like storing items under large furniture are very popular for a good reason. You can add a surprising amount of storage to a small space in this way.

Add Extra Light

Sometimes a room feels smaller than it is because it’s dark, not because you don’t actually have the space you need. By adding some extra light in your rooms, you can make it look larger.

Natural light is the best for this, so larger windows that let plenty of light in is a great option. You can also add different sources of light to the room and make the lights themselves brighter. White light seems brighter than yellow light, even if it has the same lumen value.

Mirrors

One surprisingly effective way to make your room look bigger than it is is to add a mirror. While we know a mirror is merely a reflection, it still tricks our brains into thinking the room is bigger than it is.

Mirrors also reflect light throughout your home, so you have added brightness and light sources, all of which extend your room more.

Wallpaper and Paint

As well as adding literal light to your rooms, you can make them seem lighter by changing the colors of the walls. Dark and busy wallpaper or paint can shrink a room, while light pastel colors can make a room seem much brighter and larger.

Another option is to use 3D wallpaper to make your room look larger and add an interesting talking point. 3D wallpaper can transform an ordinary room into a visual masterpiece with designs ranging from bold geometric patterns to serene nature scenes. It’s an easy way to bring depth and dimension to your space without heavy renovations. Plus, guests are sure to be impressed by the creative flair it adds to your home!

Combining multiple techniques is the best way to get the most effect from what you’re trying to do. So as well as changing the wallpaper, declutter and add some more light to your room.
