Travel Tips: 5 Easy Ways to Maintain a Healthy Routine While Traveling with Kids

Posted on August 29, 2023May 21, 2025 by Terri's Little Haven

Traveling with kids can be a delightful adventure, full of new experiences and cherished memories. However, it can also disrupt your family’s usual routine, making it challenging to prioritize health and well-being.

Fortunately, with a little planning and creativity, you can maintain a healthy routine while on the road. In this article, we’ll explore five easy ways to keep your family’s health in check during your travels.

1. Pack the Right Products

Travel can expose your family’s skin to various environmental factors, from harsh sun to dry airplane air. To keep your little ones’ delicate skin healthy, pack natural baby skincare products that are gentle and nourishing. Look for products with natural ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, and calendula, which can soothe and protect the skin.

Sunscreen is a must, especially if you’re heading to a sunny destination. Choose a natural sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection without harmful chemicals. Remember to reapply it regularly, particularly after swimming or sweating.

Don’t forget to pack moisturizing lotion to combat dry skin, especially during air travel. The recycled air in airplanes can be particularly drying to the skin. Applying a gentle moisturizer can keep your family’s skin hydrated and comfortable throughout the journey.

2. Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential for both adults and children, especially when traveling. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, irritability, and other health issues.

Make it a habit to carry reusable water bottles for each family member. You can fill them up at water fountains or ask for refills at restaurants, reducing the need for single-use plastic bottles.

To make staying hydrated more appealing for kids, consider infusing water with slices of fruit or berries. This adds a subtle flavor that can encourage them to drink more throughout the day.

Remember to hydrate before, during, and after flights to combat the drying effects of cabin air.

3. Maintain Sleep Routines

Traveling can disrupt sleep patterns, which can be particularly challenging for kids. To minimize sleep disturbances, try to maintain a consistent bedtime and wake-up schedule.

If your journey involves crossing time zones, adjust your family’s sleep schedule gradually to help them acclimate to the new time zone. Bring along comfort items from home, such as favorite blankets or stuffed animals, to create a familiar sleep environment.

4. Plan Nutritious Snacks and Meals

Rather than relying solely on fast food or airport snacks, plan ahead by packing a variety of nutritious snacks and meals. Opt for whole-grain crackers, fresh fruit, cut-up vegetables, and pre-made sandwiches. These options are not only healthier but also more cost-effective than constantly eating out.

Additionally, research family-friendly restaurants at your destination that offer balanced meal options. Many places now provide kid’s menus with healthier choices, such as grilled chicken or veggie wraps.

By making thoughtful food choices, you can ensure your family maintains a balanced diet throughout your journey.

5. Prioritize Physical Activity

Traveling often involves long hours of sitting, whether it’s in a car, on a plane, or on a train. To counteract this sedentary lifestyle, find opportunities for physical activity during your trip. Look for family-friendly activities like hiking, biking, or simply taking a stroll in a nearby park.

Many hotels now offer fitness facilities or swimming pools that can be a fun way for kids to stay active. You can also pack a jump rope or a ball for impromptu play at rest stops or in your accommodation.

Maintaining a healthy routine while traveling with kids doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a little preparation and a positive attitude, you can create lasting memories of your travels while prioritizing your family’s well-being.
