“Have fun!” Learn more about Launch After School

When Launch After School’s three founders came together and decided to establish a coding academy for kids, they knew they wanted to do something different. They hoped to create the kind of experience they wished they’d had when they were growing up.

First, they wanted their program to be fun. Because if kids don’t enjoy doing something, they won’t do it, or they’ll resent doing it.

At the same time, they recognized the growing importance of computer literacy—it has become an essential part of what it means to be an educated person. They desired to equip kids with related skills that would serve them well in school and beyond. They knew that, despite evidence of their importance, hard computer coding skills are often still not taught in traditional classrooms.

Finally, the Launch founders wanted to be sure parents would be partners in the process and vowed to provide regular updates on student progress.

Today, Launch After School is one of the most sought-after programs for teaching kids to code in our area. Clearly, our founders were on the right track when they developed their approach. Students enjoy the self-paced curriculum, which combines online learning with in-person opportunities to ask questions in a supportive, non-competitive environment. Launch staff carefully track student progress so parents can understand what they’re learning. Kids develop solid skills, eventually creating their own programs that they can share with friends and family or even use in college applications.

Here are some examples of skills your child will acquire at Launch:

  • Building programs for Sphero, a small robot
  • Learning about the syntax and structure of JavaScript
  • Setting up and coding an HTML5 website
  • Bootstrap and the grid model for advanced layout and responsive web pages

Interested in giving Launch a try? Summer is a great time to enroll in one of Austin summer camps. Designed for children 8 to 14, our camps provide kids with the opportunity to create their own computational artifacts at their own pace, such as web pages, programs, and scripts. Choose from a morning, afternoon or full-day session. Sessions run for two weeks, so you don’t have to make a huge commitment. It’s a great way to find out if you like Launch’s approach and if it’s a good fit for your child. We promise your kids will consider it one of their most memorable experiences of the summer. We hope you’ll give it a try!
