5 different types of therapy options for families
There are so many different types of therapy out there that can benefit your family. Today, I want to talk about different types of therapy options for families and why you might be able to benefit from them. Here they are:
Individual therapy
Depending on your needs as a family unit, only one or two people may need help in the form of therapy. If someone is experiencing issues with depression or anxiety, individual therapy might be a great place to start. Individual therapy is greatly beneficial when it comes to tackling hurdles that you might experience with life changes and growth.
Couples therapy
Every family is held on by two people: the mom and the dad. Couples therapy can be helpful if you are together, of course, but even if you are separated, it’s very important to stay strong when it comes to co-parenting, and that’s where couples therapy can help you guys, as well. I am a firm believer that having a strong and healthy relationship (no matter if it’s a marriage, or separated relationship) is one of the most important things to focus on when it comes to raising a family. Your daughters should know what to look for and your sons should learn how to treat women. And from my experience, kids learn best from experience – from what they see. So, no matter if you think you are in the best relationship, or you definitely know that you have things to work on in your marriage, seek help to improve your relationship by attending couples therapy. You can only benefit from it; it cannot hurt!
Physical therapy
Physical therapists can help identify and treat movement problems and for busy families, this can be a game changer since they can help individuals maintain and/or restore as much function as possible. This can help manage pain, help improve overall health, wellness, and fitness, and it can help aging parents (or grandparents) stay active for their kids. Most people think that physical therapy is there *only* for people with injuries, but that’s not the case at all. Physical therapy is beneficial for people with injuries, yes, but it’s also beneficial for those that just need the extra help getting back into an active state.
Family therapy
There are many different forms of family therapies out there, but to start, let’s discuss what family therapy actually is. It is a type of psychotherapy that is used when dealing with families (obviously). It emphasizes family relationships as an important factor in psychological health. As such, this type of therapy focuses on family problems, which are seen in relation to family interactions, instead of based only on individual members of a unit. Family therapists usually focus on the interactions between family members and how those interactions may foster multiple issues. For many families seeking help, family therapy is a great place to start. Most therapists will recommend making sure that you do individual therapy, as well. For kids, it might be play therapy, which is always beneficial, or it may be another form of therapy, as well.
Speech therapy
Speech therapy is useful in so many different cases, but today, I want to focus on the most beneficial form of speech therapy, which is speech therapy for children. Talk About Therapy – Speech Therapy says, “Children can experience a variety of speech and/or language difficulties at various ages, from infancy into young adulthood. Some of the common disorders experienced by children fall into the following categories:
- Expressive Language: An expressive language disorder affects how a child communicates and expresses their wants and needs.
- Receptive Language: A receptive language disorder affects how a child understands and interprets language. A great example of receptive language is if a child is able to follow directions.
- Articulation: An articulation disorder can be found in children that have trouble with the pronunciation of words. Many children have the language needed to communicate, but they are difficult to understand. If this is true, they may be exhibiting an articulation disorder.
Expressive and Receptive language disorders typically coincide, but sometimes expressive language delays can be seen alone as well.” Sometimes, it can be hard to figure out if your child needs speech therapy, and that’s where their services come in. They offer Atlanta speech therapy services for kids and speech therapy for toddlers. They serve children and families in the Atlanta area to provide accessible pediatric speech therapy near you. Talk About Therapy was created because they believe in and love providing intuitive, effective and sustainable therapy to their patients and their families to improve their feeding and communication skills. They say, “we pride ourselves in treating our families like they are our own. Our philosophy is to help our patients and their families build a strong functional foundation towards communication and feeding, and slowly build upon that foundation to create lasting results. Our therapists provide services such as pediatric feeding therapy; feeding therapy for babies; speech therapy for kids; speech therapy for toddlers; pediatric intensive feeding programs; pre- and post- frenectomy tongue procedure, or frenulectomy, tongue tie and lip tie therapy and advisement; and specialized services such as providing feeding therapy for Autism, as well as addressing common breastfeeding problems, all in our clinic or online through the convenience of teletherapy.”
No matter what kind of therapy your family might benefit from, you are not alone and you are doing a fantastic job! These services, such as speech therapy and family therapy, are here to help your family THRIVE!
