A career in education is incredibly fulfilling but teaching is very demanding. It means long hours and taking your work home with you. People often think that hard work is offset by the long holidays but you’re likely to be working during that time planning lessons etc. as well. If you want to work in education but you don’t like the idea of being in the classroom there are still plenty of options available to you. Here are just some of the ways that you can work in education without being a teacher.
Administration
A lot of people are attracted to a job in education because they want to play a part in shaping the young minds of the future and it’s a common misconception that being a teacher is the only way to do that. You can actually have more of an impact in a career that deals with the running of the school itself. You can help to set school policies and aims which can make big changes to the lives of students. Most administrative positions require a masters degree in education so it does mean going back to college if you’re not already qualified. If you don’t want to do that, you could opt for an admin role further down the ladder. Working in the office or on reception are both jobs you could land with good experience, without the need for more education.
School Counsellor
If a close relationship with the children is top of your list of priorities but teaching is too strenuous for you, a job as a school counsellor is the best option for you. You will need to get extra qualifications which can mean taking a gre exam and going to graduate school. Alternatively, you can take online school counseling programs no gre required. This is often the easier choice for most people because you can retrain without having to give up work which is a lot easier financially.
Curriculum Design
One of the most important jobs in education is curriculum design. If you take on a job in this area, you’ll be responsible for making big decisions on what is taught in schools and how it is delivered. It’s a great opportunity to be at the forefront of education and make a big impact on the lives of children across the country. You’ll need a good understanding of the particular subject area that you want to work in so you usually need a degree of some kind. There are a few different roles including writing the curriculum itself and designing exams for schools and colleges. You could also work outside of the school system and design educational materials for adults as well. Companies are often looking for curriculums for advanced training and skills for their employees so you could look into that as well.
After working in curriculum design for a while, you might fancy a bit of a career change. You can also make a move into government work. Experts are always needed to help shape national policy on education. If you really want to affect change and improve the education system, this should be your eventual end goal.
