Do you ever feel as though your career is meaningless? Perhaps you struggle to get up and go to work in the morning because what’s the point? After all, you’re just going to be crunching numbers all day and with that thought comes a crushing realization. If you didn’t show up for work that morning, the world wouldn’t change at all. No one’s life would be impacted in a significant way, and the earth would continue to turn.
Now at this point, you might be thinking two things. First: I’m not the only one, lots of people’s jobs are meaningless. And second: well at least I’m still getting paid. While both of these facts are true, it’s worth pointing out that you don’t have to be part of the norm and it is possible to get paid to do a job that you care about. There’s no better way to make sure you care about your career than to pursue a job that actually matters. But how do you do this?
Are You Qualified?
There will be lots of cases where the qualification that you are using right now could be used in another job where your work will be making a difference. For instance, you might be working as a content writer, creating articles and campaigns for typical companies and businesses that might be doing more harm than good like businesses selling fat-burning supplements. But, there’s no reason why you can’t write for a different company instead. Perhaps PETA is looking for new marketers for their business. If that’s the case, you can join a cause and really make a difference through your career with a job that you are already trained for.
Alternatively, you might be looking at a career possibility that you are a completely unqualified for. You can’t go from bank manager to counselor overnight. But it’s not actually as difficult as you think to get the qualification you need. Online counseling programs are available that are easy to join and that you can even complete in your spare time. So, you’ll be able to continue working that meaningless job until you have the knowledge you need to really make a difference.
Can You Forge Your Own Path?
Yes, you can, and there’s nothing stopping you from setting up your own business that you can use to make a difference in this world. We’re talking about adopting a philanthropic cause, and you’d be wrong to think that a company like this cannot also be profitable. They certainly can be. Just ask the owner of the company in Australia that’s now worth millions who started their business with the aim to remove plastic bottles that end up in the ocean from their packaging.
Juggle A Couple
Last but not least, perhaps you’re attached to that cushy paycheck a little too much even if the job behind it is meaningless. That doesn’t mean your career has to lack meaning. You can take on a side job that gives you more inspiration and injects your life with something that matters to you.
