How Only Fans is Changing Social Media

OnlyFans has grown more popular this year thanks to the quarantine necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, more famous people are mentioning it in their tweets, posts, songs, and daily language.

What exactly is OnlyFans and how does it change the social media game? In this article, we’ll answer these questions. Read on!

What is OnlyFans?

What is OnlyFans? OnlyFans is a subscription-based social media platform where content creators charge subscribers — or “fans” — a monthly fee for viewing their content.

Creators choose the pricing while OnlyFans itself takes 20% of the total earnings. The platform is for any kind of content creator: artists, chefs, gym buffs, foodies, etc — but it’s mostly associated with adult content.

So, how does is it changing the social media landscape?

More Freedom to Creators and Influencers

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other popular social media networks let users create content that follows their Community Guidelines.

However, many are specialized (like Instagram for photos, Twitter for short messages, etc) and they have limitations. Creators and influencers are only able to post certain content types on one platform.

Meanwhile, the same creators and influencers are free to produce whatever content they want on OnlyFans for whoever is willing to pay (within legal limits, of course). They also have the freedom to put a price on their content.

Intimacy and Interaction

While Facebook and other social media networks let people interact with others for free through posts, photos, videos, comments, likes, reactions, and shares, OnlyFans offer a deeper level of connection and intimacy.

OnlyFans’ content creators can post any type of pictures and videos their fans want. Followers can submit requests. Creators can live-stream and interact more directly with fans.

They can also send private messages or mass-message their fans to let them know of new offers, promotions, and upcoming content. Fans can vote for new content they want to see from the creator.

And that’s where OnlyFans differ from other social media sites: the interactive features let fans be a part of the content creation, while the creators earn good money.

Fundraisers and Charity

Another reason why OnlyFans catapulted to mainstream consciousness is its mention by celebrities and online personalities. It has also been used for fundraisers and charitable events.

During the Australian bush fires, OnlyFans creator Kaylen Ward offered her nude photographs in exchange for proof of donations over $10 to charities that assist in the crisis. Reports said the campaign raised over $500,000.

So even though OnlyFans is most popular for the adult stuff from content creators, it’s also a new vehicle to raise awareness for certain causes and charities.

Current Challenges

But OnlyFans still lags behind other social media networks. Facebook, for instance, has billions of monthly active users, while OnlyFans only has 30 million registered users.

Users must pay to access content, whereas Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram contents are free. And then there’s the issue of adult content, which isn’t allowed in various networks.

The website also lacks any “Explore” or “Discover” feature that could allow fans to find new creators.

New creators often find it difficult to convince people to subscribe. This is why many creators recommend you build your social media following first before joining OnlyFans.
